Putin the Christian Crusader – told you so – back in February!

Bible – bashing Russian president Vladimir Putin recently invoked Jesus, Satan, and transsexual bogeymen in a Kremlin ceremony for carving up Ukraine.

Putin paraphrased the Bible at a rally:  "There is no greater love than giving up one’s soul for one’s friends.”  

This was clearly a reference to John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

"They [the West] are moving toward open satanism," said Putin in a speech broadcast to millions online.

I make no apologies for reiterating that Putin clearly sees himself as a Christian defender for the world 

“We see many of the Euro-Atlantic countries are actually rejecting their roots, including the Christian values that constitute the basis of Western civilisation. They are denying moral principles and all traditional identities: national, cultural, religious and even sexual. They are implementing policies that equate large families with same-sex partnerships, belief in God with the belief in Satan.” Speech 2013. 

The question must be asked – does this influential Christian fundamentalist welcome Armageddon (End Times), as the precursor of the so-called 'Second coming' of Christ?

Pat Robertson says Putin was ‘compelled by God’ to invade Ukraine to fulfil Armageddon prophecy

Televangelist crank Robertson said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “compelled by God” in his decision to invade Ukraine, suggesting that Russia’s attacks are a precursor to an end-times battle in Israel.

The priest (bishop), Father Tikhon, was very complimentary about the Russian President’s devotion to Christ: “Vladimir Putin is indeed an Orthodox Christian believer… who confesses, takes Communion and realises his responsibility to God,” 

He added that Putin’s placed at the “head of Russia by God’s will.”

Organised Religious fundamentalism (i.e., well indoctrinated mental delusion) is a serious threat to our species

Funny isn’t it that the guys in high places (who always seem to want to kill millions and destroy the planet) love to invoke their version of the godhead.  

I have spent a lifetime warning about the clear dangers of fundamentalism. Many have not understood. However, the threat of catastrophic international military escalation makes it plain that such religious extremism may result in disastrous consequences for us all.

When gullible yet powerful world leaders swallow the toxic pill of religious self-righteousness the rest of us better watch out. 

Putin is not the first and probably will not be the last 'Saviour' to influence a nation with a widely - accepted biblical credo. 

 How many more must die before the world finally wakes to to the peril of organised  religious delusion?
