Southport residents will be offered extra coronavirus testing after evidence of the South African variant of the virus was located within the region.
Sefton Council are planning to initiate dedicated test centres to hunt for the new variant in specific areas of the borough - and strict police enforcement against Covid rule breakers continues in Southport town centre.
The South African variant, like the UK variant, may be more transmissible than the original form of coronavirus but health officials stressed there was no evidence it is more transmissible or dangerous than the UK variant.
Door-to-door testing has been introduced after cases were found in Hertfordshire, Surrey, Kent, Walsall, Sefton and three London boroughs.
