It’s quite a rare thing but burnout can occur at times. Vintage pipes, like the ones I collect, may have experienced a hard life of abuse so they can fail now and then. Recently, this happened to a large old Hardcastle briar of mine.
I was not ready however to chuck away such a lovely old pipe, so I set about crafting a working repair. I shall let the images tell the story…
The original damage to the Hardcastle. Many folks would throw such a pipe away, but I had other plans.
Drastic yes - but carving back to the good wood was essential.
The new hole, ready for the ancient bog oak plug.
In goes the new piece of bog oak, glued and tapped into position.
A bit of sanding and a drop of olive was applied next., Nothing fancy but a working repair that gives a few more years to a grand old briar...
It's a rustic countryman's type repair that will do the trick for fishing, biking or garden piping. One day I may polish it to make it look 'pretty', but then again - that's not really my style ...
Success...
