Pat Regan: New Pier out of the question

Poor old Southport Pier is, as we know, somewhat knackered.

It’s not the first time either in its history that it’s needed a good dose of TLC to survive. I hear that Sefton taxpayers may be asked to pay the complete repair cost of an alleged £13 Million.

One thought came to mind.

Would it be a feasible option to rebuild a newer better pier that was longer and more resilient to the passage of time and adverse weather?

It would need to be longer and stronger because the current coastal eco-situation shows that earth is very much conquering water on the increasingly grassy lands encroaching on the old structure.

Parts of the old pier could also be incorporated into the new structure to give it a feeling of continuity, so long as they did not add to overall costs or compromise the new pier’s planned more durable nature.

It’s not hard to imagine that before long, bushes and trees may actually overhang the decks of the existing pier.

All the wishful thinking and cries for golden beaches like days long ago, will be to no avail. Mother Nature will please herself and if she wants marsh rather than sandy shore then we will not be able to stop it.

So, would a new robust pier, or some form of long jetty perhaps, actually be a cheaper (long-term option) than pouring cash into an old structure that demands regular repair work?
