Labour councillor tells Ainsdale folk they are 'not' in Southport

An Ainsdale councillor (Janet Harrison) has abruptly told Ainsdale people that they are now ‘not’ a part of their home town Southport. Of course, this may be officially/politically true, yet I feel Labour’s bluntness herein will create a great deal of local tension.

Councillor Harrison used social media to drill this divisive point home and to also transparently promote her Labour colleague, MP Bill Esterson, as “Ainsdale’s next MP”.

Some will see this Facebook post as being little more than creeping authoritarian political engineering, and hollow mind screw.

I, like thousand of others,  was born and raised a sandgrounder and always will be one. Ainsdale is in Southport and no amount of manipulative political spin will ever change that.

It’s like the 1970s when the political brass decided that we Lancashire folks were to be labelled as Merseysiders.

No way! For example, just look at the coastal geography, we are on the banks of Lancashire’s River Ribble – not the Mersey.

It’s time that we stood up to this blinding nonsense, as they are doing their very best to destroy our Southport heritage and label Southport as just another lesser suburb of the big city!

Politics is, like war, a highly contentious issue that brings out the very best and abject worse in people. Furthermore, like they always say, you cannot please everyone all the time. I believe it’s good to work with politicians who do their best for the community, regardless of party.

Of course, politicians will and do have to test the strength of their convictions at times. This is especially true when divisive issues are raised.

Political parties do habitually expect broad adherence to their manifesto from their representatives, and we all know how members must sometimes choose (clash) between party and conscience when hot topics arise.

Political matters, like religion, are always subjects that get the happy throng shouting out their opinions. They also provide some of us writers with a regular source of interesting material.
