The bumbling UK’s Net Zero/Climate alarmist inspired boiler swap over plan appears to have been largely an embarrassing letdown.
UK PM Rishi Sunak recently made a U turn on the boiler issue amongst other things.
He announced that the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be postponed by five years to 2035. A ban on installing new oil and LPG boilers, and also new coal heating, for homes off the gas grid will be delayed from 2026 until 2035. The poorest households will now be exempted from the ban on new gas boilers from 2035. Alarmist – based climate policies that would have forced landlords to upgrade the energy effectiveness of their properties have been scrapped.
Air source heat pump heating does not come without problems. Moreover, The UK Government's £450 million scheme to convince us to install the allegedly eco-friendly boiler alternative is questionable.
Concerns about availability, trustworthiness, noise levels and functionality issues have indicated that these contraptions may undoubtedly turn out to be the next major government misselling fiasco. Rather comically, it’s a paradox that when days get colder, the cost of air pump heating grows. This means that more conventional systems may be required as a backup.
Other things to consider.
These systems rely upon costly electricity.
They cannot compete with standard gas boilers for heat production.
They sometimes need their existing radiators to be replaced with bigger ones.
Many residences are not suitable for air pumps and additional insulation may be an issue.
They’re not cheap to install (estimated to be between £7,000 and £13,000 for an air source pump, up to £30,000 for a ground source one). This is before grants available under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Air source pumps may be very noisy. This can be frustrating and lead to problems with health and neighbours. Issues around possible noise pollution was reported by Defra.
Ground source pumps apparently require a big garden for pipes to be buried underneath. Issues around possible noise pollution from these systems was reported by Defra.
It is also reported that government grants are attracting unqualified 'cowboy' installers. The principal refrigerants generally used in heat pumps are called hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. These HFCs have high global warming potential if they're freed into the atmosphere, Experts have stated that well-trained technicians that understand the value of collecting the refrigerant and not letting it emit into the atmosphere are needed.
Massive bills!
Back in April the Daily Mail reported.
‘Britons who have installed heat pumps in their homes today told of their anger at being left with 'soul destroying' electricity bills and enormous installation costs. It comes after the Government's drive to get Britons to install heat pumps was branded 'shameful' and an 'embarrassment' after missing its installations target. Fewer than 10,000 pumps have been installed - of a 30,000 target - during the first year of a scheme giving households a £5,000 voucher to help cover the cost.’
Lord Haughey, the owner of a heat pump firm, warned that the units experience performance issues when the mercury drops below -5C. Furthermore, the systems require glycol (anti-freeze) to be replaced regularly, or else the pumps can run into technical problems.
Issues with foul smells have also been linked to these absurd machines.
Basically, as it stands these new heating system are not really fit for purpose and as much use as a chocolate teapot.
To meet the UK’s climate alarmist - based (all hail the blessed St Greta) target of reducing emissions to Net Zero by 2050, the government has stated that ‘virtually all heating of buildings will need to be decarbonised’.
So what about NET ZERO?
Half the World Faces Starvation Under Net Zero Policies, Say Two Top Climate Scientists
Billions of people around the world face starvation if Net Zero policies ban the production of nitrogen fertiliser derived from fossil fuels. This is the stark warning from two top American scientists who say that eliminating fossil fuel-derived nitrogen fertilisers and pesticides “will result in about half the world’s population not having enough food to eat”. They add that eliminating Net Zero fertiliser will create “worldwide starvation”.
