It was nothing fancy yet the little nest box I crafted up and attached to a tree, finally did the trick.
Several blue tits had checked it out initially and decided not to take residence. However, a few days later a great tit was spotted exiting the box.
Time ticked away fast and before we knew it the merry jingling of calling chicks was heard. The parents worked tirelessly to raise this fine new family and we can only admire their tenacity.
Prowling loose cats and murderous magpies scored zero and the great tits were victorious.
Anyway, this was a nice win for local wildlife, and it really made our day too.
The following clips and pictures speak for themselves.
Time to leave the safety of the nest box.
The first chick takes the plunge.
Come out number two, your time is up!
One of the hardest - grafting and loyal parents in the neighbourhood calls to the new family.
Number three takes flight.
This chirpy little punk rocker almost got left behind, yet mum called back later and urged him to join the rest of the clan.
The above clip was shot by my wife, Cath on her mobile phone. It showed the fourth chick flying out.
We grabbed images of four chicks leaving the nest box but believe there may have been more.
NB: Unlike some other charities, Songbird Survival is an organisation that tells the 'truth' about
the decline in species.
