Pat Regan: Trust me I’m a doctor – has anything really changed?

In 1958, thalidomide was produced in the United Kingdom by The Distillers Company (Biochemicals) Ltd, under the brand names of Distaval, Tensival, Valgraine and Asmaval. Their advertisement claimed that:

'Distaval can be given with complete safety to pregnant women and nursing mothers without adverse effect on mother or child.'

The drug was prescribed for a range of conditions including pneumonia, colds and flu and for relieving the symptom of nausea often experienced in early pregnancy.

THALIDOMIDE AND PREGNANCY

In the 1950s, the medical boffins did not realise that the effects of a drug could be passed through the placental barrier and harm a foetus in the womb. Subsequently, the use of medications during pregnancy was not strictly controlled. In the tragic case of thalidomide, no tests were done involving expectant women.

The first time the link between thalidomide and its terrible impact on development was made public was in a letter published in The Lancet from an Australian doctor William McBride, in 1961.

In the few short years that thalidomide was available, it's estimated that over 10,000 babies were affected by the drug worldwide

Was the drug removed after this appalling medical disaster?

More recently thalidomide was used as a treatment for leprosy in many countries and to control some AIDS-related conditions, as well as a targeted cancer drug for treating cancers such as multiple myeloma.

In Spain, thalidomide was extensively available throughout the 1970s and possibly even into the 1980s.

People trust the so-called experts, and especially doctors, with their lives when it comes to potentially deadly medicines and new vaccinations that are 'supposed' to protect us and our trusting children.

At times the experts get it very wrong and the side effects are not always immediately apparent. Medical experts (especially those backed by forceful politicians) can be extremely persuasive.

The ones who are ‘strongly urging’ the public, en masse, to accept unchartered chemicals into our systems today are effectively just the same as the well-respected doctors who once pushed trusting mothers into poisoning their babies, via taking thalidomide.
