Empty Plates Protest against Southport MP Damien Moore

Masked public protestors sent a message of dissatisfaction to Southport’s Tory MP, Damien Moore, today. The small group left plates with messages written on them outside Mr Moore’s office in Post Office Avenue. He abstained on Labour’s motion calling to extend free school meals for the poorest children.

Damien Moore also voted against a motion to give furloughed workers 80% of previous incomes.

Mr Moore previously exhibited a poor showing in the People Power Index coming in at 611 out of 650 MPs.

The UK government recently voted down, by a majority of 61, a motion put forward by the Labour Party calling on the Conservatives to extend free school meals over the holidays up to and including the Easter break next year. Following an opposition day debate in the Commons, the government failed to support the proposal that would have seen the same level of provision afforded to families as was delivered over the summer break.

Closing the discussion, Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey claimed that the government was trying to “make sure we continue to put the vulnerable first” but also said that “work is the best way out of poverty.”

The Tory stance has seen a great deal of public resentment flow and protests are growing across the UK.

Empty plates were left at the Wolverhampton MP's office in protest over free school meals.

Moreover, Southend West MP Sir David Amess was one of 322 MPs who last week voted against a Labour motion calling for the government to extend the programme in England until Easter 2021. A protest was organised by the ‘All Rise Collective’, a group of inclusive feminist allies in the community, and targeted the constituency office of Southend West MP.

The Witney (Oxfordshire) MP, Robert Courts, voted against Labour’s proposal last week, with residents now reacting by sticking plates to the Waterloo House door in Witney’s High Street.

An ’empty plates’ protest was planned outside South Thanet MP Craig Mackinlay’s office  (October 27) in a demonstration against the voting down of an Opposition Day motion to extend free school meals into the holidays until Easter 2021.

Death Threats

A Conservative MP said he and his family have received death threats while his office has been vandalised after he voted against offering free meals to children during school holidays. Stuart Anderson was among 322 MPs who voted with the government against a Labour motion in the House of Commons last week, after a campaign by Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford calling for the extension of free school meal provision.

However, a Black Country MP has accused Labour of "playing politics with Covid and vulnerable children" over the free school meals saga.  Tory MP Marco Longhi, of Dudley North, defended his decision in voting against a Labour Party motion to extend the voucher scheme, saying: "A lot of money wasn't reaching vulnerable children."

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is facing an increasing insurgence over a refusal to extend free school meals to all holidays.
