Woodvale Jackdaw roof rescue

This morning caring staff members from Brookdale Daycare Centre in Sandbrook Way noticed a young jackdaw that was trapped and dangling on dilapidated woodwork in flats opposite the centre.

Staff tried desperately to alert residents at the flats, yet to no avail. They were understandably distressed at the bird’s plight. The jackdaw had been stuck up there for several hours it seemed and a call from the Brookdale to the RSPB was only greeted with advice that they would “pass a message on”.

Above: the young jackdaw hanging from the broken roof.

Eventually, a female staff member from the Brookdale arrived at the Regan house (the family live close to Brookdale) and asked for urgent assistance. Pat Regan called to Jason, his son, to help carry their ladder around to the flats, where the bird was still dangling and flapping its wings from the broken roof.

Pat said: "Jason and I ran the ladder up alongside the flats.  I climbed up to find the poor little bird hanging from a thread that was wrapped around its leg. The Jackdaw’s leg was bleeding and it was calling out and flapping its wings in panic. Hanging on with my right hand, I felt around in the broken roof debris to discover the thread that was holding the bird captive. I was lucky to be able to snap it with a tug of my left hand. The bird was distressed, as expected, and once free it flew to the ground".

When the family got it home they carefully trimmed the thread off the bird's leg and cleaned the wounds.

Pat’s wife, Cath, immediately rang Parker & Crowther vets on Liverpool Road. They were advised to take the Jackdaw in for an examination, so they immediately rushed off to get it checked out. https://parkerandcrowther.co.uk/

The vet was very kind and advised that the jackdaw had serious nerve damage to its leg, was emaciated and that the odds were against it. However, they promised to do what they could to save it.

Fingers crossed that the little bird will survive, but at least it was rescued from a slow death on that Woodvale roof.

Hopefully, no more birds will be trapped in this dilapidated building, which some councillors, etc, have regarded to be an eyesore for many years.
