Southport Care Home Boss David Barton Jailed

Southport residents have been horrified to discover the depths of depravity uncovered, regarding a Birkdale nursing home owner.

Oxford Road’s Barton Park owner, David Barton senior, had spent years swindling trusting elderly residents out of vast sums of money and possessions.

Barton is now serving 21 years for these disgusting crimes.

The tale of Barton’s wickedness against innocent pensioners is so appalling that the National Press have covered it extensively.

Between 1997 and 2013 Barton had taken more than £4 million from victims. He targeted people who were 'wealthy, vulnerable and childless.'

Barton was caught out by what was described as his “extraordinary greed”. He stole millions from wealthy residents at the luxurious Barton Park Nursing Home.

Barton was reported by the Liverpool press to have showed no emotion as he was jailed. The Judge told him: “You can go.” Barton showed no emotion.

Judge Steven Everett said: "I am struggling to remember anyone as dishonest as him, as morally bankrupt as him."

Name Change... 

Barton was originally called Ramamurthie Dasaratha Naidoo and moved to the UK from South Africa with his family in the 1960s. The dad-of-four and his wife Lucinda became directors of his mother and father's nursing home business Choice Classic Ltd in 1992.

The Liverpool press also reported that Barton laundered his ill-gotten gains through the bank accounts of his sons, ex-Conservative councillor David Richard Barton and David Charles Barton.

Sentencing Barton, he said: "You are a despicably greedy man, a hypocrite who claimed you were caring for the residents. "I'm quite sure the person you cared for the most is no one but yourself, not even your family, with your insatiable appetite for fancy cars and building your property empire."

Rosemary Booth, 69 years, of Hesketh Drive, Southport – who acted as general manager of Barton Park Nursing Home  has also been jailed, for six years, for her part in the conspiracy to defraud.

Could this situation have been avoided - are regulations stringent enough? 

How could the local regulatory authorities not have spotted  something so desperately wrong (for so long) at this luxury establishment for elderly residents?

Are current regulations in these homes sufficient? Does this odious case indicate that the elderly are being let down by the authorities that are 'supposed' to be in place to protect them from such criminal parasites in the community?

Is this sad tale an isolated incident or just the tip of the iceberg?
